 Ruawai under-nines played Southern in junior rugby at Farmlands Rugby Park in Dargaville on the weekend. “The teams are playing really well across the board,” said Western Sharks under-nine’s coach Corin Schick. “The coaches are focussing on the importance of tackle. It is the under-nines’ first year of playing tackle and being taught correctly eliminates the risk of injury and they aren’t scared of participating. They learn not to worry about how big the opponent is, they just play. Our focus on spectator support is about positivity. We believe if you can’t say something positive from the sideline, don’t say it at all. Any positive feedback is amazing to help a child to learn. This has been taken on board by those watching the games and we really appreciate that. It helps make coaching so much easier and allows the players to have an enjoyable game.”

Fundraiser to aid Fiji cyclone victims

Students spread conservation message

 by Rose Stirling

 by Ayla Miller

A Dargaville mother touched by her army officer son’s description of destruction in Fiji after cyclone Winston, has decided to host a fundraiser at the town hall this Saturday.

Two environmentally conscious and tech savvy Dargaville Intermediate School students are using their skills and knowledge to spread the word about the endangered Maui dolphin as part of a national school Experiencing Marine Reserves programme.

 Dianna King and Soro Ramacake sit together inside the town hall in preparation for Saturday night’s variety concert.

Diana King is the mother of Colonel Glenn King who oversaw the relief effort in Fiji. “He rang us from Fiji and said ‘these people were poor before this happened but they have absolutely nothing now.’ For him to say that, and he’s been in the military a long time, really touched my heart and I couldn’t sleep that night. I really wanted to do something — they are our Pacific neighbours and even though we are small we can do something big. Even if one person in the town gave a dollar that would be a great thing. “So we’ve got together and with the help of the local council they’ve given us the town hall for free.” The event is set to be a fun day with the Dargaville Kapa Haka group taking

part as well as the Fijian dance group, the Sax and Two Sisters jazz band and Zumba classes led by Mrs King herself along with five other instructors. Mrs King has arranged Soro Ramacake from the Fijian community group in Whangarei to help co-host the event. “The Dargaville Lions will be helping us out as well as Countdown who have come forward with supplies for the barbecue, and The Warehouse are sponsoring supplies to be sent over too,” says Mrs King. Local businesses have stepped up to the cause and donations will be raffled off on the day. “I was just overwhelmed the response — everyone’s been amazing.” The support Fiji fundraiser runs from 10am until 3pm.  There’s decades of skill and knowledge in our team. We want to share it with you!

Recognising artistic history

 by Ayla Miller

The Dargaville Arts Association are returning to their roots as they open the Muddy Waters Gallery in the same building the original club met in during their early years. The gallery, previously on the corner of Parenga and Kapia street, will now call the old Municipal Chambers home in the first move towards creating a new Dargaville Community Arts Centre. Chair Peter Boyd says the building has a rich history and the association are pleased to be able to present the space back to the community. “Our older generation have quite fond memories of activities that have occurred on the top floor so we are looking forward to inviting the community back in.” Eighty-nine-year-old life member of the Arts Association Marama Ingle is still painting today and remembers when the Dargaville Art Club, established by her father Clifford Kinniburgh, used to meet in the building circa 1940s. “I was pleasantly surprised to find out this building was going to be used for art again,” she says. Muddy Waters gallery manager, Robyn Mitchell, says she is excited that the gallery is moving in a direction where they have the space to develop into a centre. “I’m looking forward to more community involvement, being able to open up for workshops and getting people excited about art.” Mr Boyd says the move will cement the association’s position as a serious organisation in the community and give them room to grow.

Running the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre costs around $40.000 a year. Raising that much money takes a lot of planning. We are very grateful to our biggest funders Northpower, Bayer NZ Ltd, Whangarei Top 10 Holiday Park and Bunkdown Lodge, which provide the bulk of the money needed to help us keep rescuing Northland’s injured native birds. Despite their generosity, we also need to raise money from the public. Last month we had a visit from seven-year-old Rylee King and her mother.  Members of the original Dargaville Artists enjoying the workshop in the municipal building — circa 1940s

This is the second year Rylee has raised money for the centre. We are very grateful, both for her contribution, and the money from our sponsors and from other members of the public. We have been receiving quite a number of native pigeons. They get into trouble when they feast on fruit such as guavas, which makes them drunk. When the pigeons try to fly away, they often have difficulty keeping on a straight course. This leads to them flying into windows and injuring themselves.  From left: Peter Boyd, Pauline Gough, Simon Gough, Ash Reed, Jenny Crundwell and Gay Reed help to set up the Muddy Waters Gallery in the new Dargaville Community Arts Centre on Hokianga Road

“This centre will mean we are able to promote ourselves as an arts destination and fit in with the wider Northland arts community.

If pigeons are left on the ground, they will be caught by cats or dogs. This is very dangerous for the birds. Although most cats and dogs only want to play with pigeons, if they bite them or claw them, this can be deadly. Injured pigeons will often wander away to hide in scrub or plants and die a slow death. Apart from drunk pigeons, this is normally a fairly quiet time of year. However, once winter sets in, strong winds and days of cold rain will be a severe test for many young birds. They can get into all sorts of trouble in the bad weather. At night, Robyn and I do the last feed for our birds in the pens outside.

Late last week, the male came down and I was able to hand-feed him. Now, when I go outside, he starts calling to let me know he is there.

Date: 12 June 2016, 10:00am – 9:00pm Any objections to this proposal should be in the hands of the Kaipara District Council before 4.00.p.m. on Friday 27 May 2016

Situations Vacant

This part of the highway has tight corners and one-way bridges, which are a safety risk and cause delays for commercial freight vehicles. Improvements are likely to include realignment of this section, with new two-lane bridges and intersections to improve safety and access.

Kaipara District Council is offering three opportunities for roles which offer lifestyles second to none. Two are based in Mangawhai which provides a wonderful coastal lifestyle and is only 90 minutes' drive from Auckland and 45 minutes from Whangarei. One role is based in Dargaville, which presents a wonderful rural and coastal lifestyle, affordable housing and only 45 minutes' drive from Whangarei and two hours from Auckland. Under the leadership of professional Commissioners and the Chief Executive, the Council is committed to attracting high-quality people to lift its performance to one of the best in New Zealand local government.

NZTA will be seeking community feedback in May-June to consider:

Customer Service Representative Mangawhai

• What will happen with the current road once the realignment is complete • Where local roads access the realigned state highway • What the new intersections will look like • How to enhance the environment, including stormwater treatment and landscaping.

Rebuilding in Vanuatu

A vision to help

 by Ayla Miller

 by Ann Morgan

Battling stifling heat and sub-standard facilities, Dargaville rotarian Margaret Bishop and her husband John have recently returned from a trip to Vanuatu’s Ambrym Island, where they helped to rebuild a school that was destroyed by Cyclone Pam.

The foyer of Big River FM has become home to the Awhi Room which is a place to help and support those in need in the community through the donations of others.

Organised by the Birkenhead Rotary Club, the aid project has taken on the task of rebuilding Mbossung Primary School in the remote village of Ulei. The project has been broken up into two stages due to cyclone season and stage one was completed late last year when the main school building was rebuilt over 10 days on the original site. Stage two is currently underway and is focussing on the other school buildings, improving the water supply system and school dormitories. Margaret said the Rotary aid work differed from other  One of the school buildings Margaret and John Bishop helped aid sent to the islands. to rebuild in Vanuatu “Rotary actually visited and asked what was needed rather completely flattening them or making than just sending items that weren’t them uninhabitable. Maryrose Wati was holidaying in Australia and she discovered the concept of the Koha Shed which is a place where people help each other by way of donated goods. “I came home and mentioned it to my friend Lye Sydney and we decided we could do with that here in Dargaville, so we came up with the Awhi Room idea.” Within a week or two the ladies were offered two vacant rooms at Big River FM to use to start their initiative. “Big River FM have been wonderful helping us by providing us somewhere to call home and we could not have done it without those who have donated goods already. “We are already outgrowing our rooms and have only been open a few

Remembering the Big Dig  by Rose Stirling

It’s been 25 years since the community of Mangawhai rallied together to save its harbour from being lost for good in what is famously now remembered as the Big Dig. To commemorate the event Mangawhai Museum has created an informative big dig display. Display team leader Bryan Clark says it was important to pay tribute to the event to make sure the heroic efforts made by those to ensure the future of the harbour were not forgotten. “Major storms in the 1970s and 1980s, including Cyclone Bola in 1987, had caused the sea to break through the Mangawhai Sandspit. The result was multiple entrances to the harbour and eventually the original harbour entrance silted up. For boat owners and fishermen, venturing to sea was a perilous exercise.” He says locals pleaded with the authorities — Kaipara District Council, Northland Regional Council and the Department of Conservation — to rescue the situation, but without success. Faced with the prospect of Mangawhai Heads losing its harbour, in January 1991 a small group of local men determined that something had to be

Game on at new store

A night for the ladies

 by Andy Bryenton

The hugely popular Fosters Home Decorating Ladies Night is back again and with even more specials. Fosters Home Decorating owner Karen Foster says it’s going to be bigger and better than previous years. “This year we’ve managed to pick up some really good Manchester specials, as well as some really good deals on Maxwell and Williams products which are up to 80 per cent off.” This is the third year in a row that Fosters has held the ladies night. Tickets cost just ten dollars and customers are invited to enjoy a glass of wine and nibbles throughout the evening and everyone who buys a ticket goes into the draw to win over $900 worth of Maxwell and Williams kitchenware. However Karen advises customers get in quick if they don’t want to miss out. “Tickets usually sell out fast, so we like to make sure people know about the event, so they feel they’ve at least had a chance.” Karen says there was never any doubt about hosting the ladies night again as feedback from previous

It’s literally all fun and games for the owners of a new store in McKay’s arcade — a specialist retailer stocked with magic, card games, role playing games, party games, puzzles and more.

 Let the games begin — Dargaville now has its very own games store, with puzzles, magic tricks, cards, board games and more

Dargaville residents may very well remember Anna-Marie Cutts from her main street souvenir and gift store Moa, but this new enterprise is far more specialised — and a lot more fun! With previous in-store neighbour Noise Co. moving in next door to the old Moa building on Victoria street, the time was right for a shift to a new venue and to a new direction. Board games, card games and ‘RPGs’ have become very popular around the world recently — a way to spend real quality time with friends

and family away from Facebook and the smartphone screen. Family game night comes with many more options than old fashioned Monopoly these days, as is evidenced by a look through the shelves at Fun and Games. To help showcase some of the zany options, there will be an open games day on Saturday the 28th — this week — free for young and old. Come down at noon to try your hand at Catopoly, Munchkin, Smash Up and more — a great free afternoon of fun. 

Turn up the voltage  by Andy Bryenton

When Mercedes-Benz invented the modern concept of the car in the latter days of the 1800s, there was still plenty of fight left in the horse and cart. Sure, the concept of a ‘motor carriage’ may have been touted as the environmental saviour of its day — imagine cities buried in the inevitable ‘byproduct’ of all that horse feed — but surely thousands of years of history wouldn’t just disappear. The nail in the coffin — which turned horses from the mainstay of transport to pets, companions and sporting animals — was Henry Ford’s Model T. So you can bet that there’s more than simple coincidence to the name Tesla’s Elon Musk has chosen for his latest car. It’s called the Model 3 and, just like the famously black ‘tin lizzie’, it’s causing a bit of a revolution. Part of that reason is the massive advances in battery technology which

auto available to the masses, Tesla’s battery tech may hold the key to not just more efficient charging times for cars — but for computers, airships, robotics, medical prosthetics — anything which needs electrical power. Knock-on effects aside, you have to love the concept of a car which costs the same as a petrol executive sedan, but which can travel over 300 kilometres on a single charge at the cost of a handful of coins. And does so with acceleration which puts many sports cars to shame. Speed sells — just ask the big boys of Bathurst, who spend millions to slug it out on the Mountain each year, hoping to translate champagne and trophies into hard forecourt capital. Tesla’s previous luxury tourer, the Model S, literally left V8 supercars in its wake, with a 0–100km/h time under 3 seconds. That hurt and Tesla have used the spectacle of the Model S to tout the cheaper, more practical Model 3 to over 400,000 cash paying preorder customers. We wait, of course, to see if the sleek looking little Tesla holds up to the real world in the same way Henry Ford’s flagship did over a century past. The smart money right now says it will — and that the sea-change starts here. 

Pink is cool, bullying isn’t

SPORTS RESULTS

 by Rose Stirling

Students from four Kaipara schools donned pink to raise awareness and put an end to bullying with a Pink Shirt Day last week.

 Students from Matakohe School dressed up for Pink T-shirt day, an initiative to raise awareness and put an end to bullying

Dargaville High School, Matakohe, Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka Primary schools all took part. Dargaville High School social worker Carla Lindsey says the whole school got dressed in pink including the teachers. “We had a pink shirt mufti day so kids were encouraged to wear pink and go all out. We had a free sausage sizzle and it was a really good day.” Matakohe School teacher Natalie Lynch says students there had been studying bullying in the lead up to the Pink Shirt Day. “They looked at the things that you can do to help people who are being bullied and as teachers we just reinforced the message that bullying is not okay. dressed up in pink which was awesome, we also did pink face painting for kids who didn’t have a T-shirt.” The Matakohe school support team sold pink cupcakes and pink milkshakes to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation who lead the event nationwide. Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007, when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying by mobilising their whole school, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Mental Health Foundation spokesperson, Moira Clunie says bullying is far too common in New Zealand and has significant and ongoing impacts on people’s mental health and wellbeing. 

A Hui was held at Te Houhanga Marae, Dargaville in August 2014 to discuss the serious decline of Toheroa on Ripiro beach. The decision was made to place a rāhui on the taking of Toheroa on Ripiro beach from Maunganui Bluff to Tikitiki stream to help revive the critically depleted beds. Notice is hereby given by the Te Roroa Whatu Ora Trust and Manawhenua Board that there will be no issuing of permits to harvest Toheroa due to the decline and reducing stock numbers. Te Roroa excercises their manawhenua and customary authorities over their area. In this instance from the Maunganui Bluff to Tikitiki south Māhuta M This rāhui has NOT been lifted.

This is an informal group that shares experiences and supports each other followed by light refreshments
